Harley-Davidson 750cc STREET and 500cc STREET Motorcycles: Water Cooled Revolution X Motor

Harley-Davidson introduces two new Revolution X powered motorcycles.. The STREET 750 and STREET 500.

Harley Revolution-X STREET Motorcycles are Urban Style In Motion

The Harley-Davidson 750 STREET (MSRP: $7500) and 500 STREET (MSRP: $6700) are the first completely new motorcycle added to Harley’s lineup in 13 years… and they’re based on that that same introduction; The Revolution engine, brought to market with the V-Rod. Keep in mind that Harley has been listening to people (through crowd sourcing) and have come up with a dangerously effective recipe for their motorcycles in the future. They are building bikes based on what people want..

UPDATE: We’ve put a video together to further illustrate this article and spread the word about the cool new STREET Harleys.

These are impressive, modern American motorcycles.

That being said lets get this out of the way right now. Many people [not most] will not accept that it’s a ‘real Harley’ because it’s not a traditional big twin. One may as well say that since it doesn’t have side-valve heads it’s not a Harley either… Beyond that keep in mind that both bikes in the new Harley STREET line are listed by Harley at 489 lbs (wet). That’s a 100 pounds less than a Sportster giving it a better horsepower to weight ratio through a six speed transmission on exactly the same wheelbase. Nimble and light with a powerful motor… In other words: Take it to the streets.

Whatever your view this is an undeniable ‘All American’ motorcycle [platform] built on a very tough, powerful and lightweight motor that’s ALL Harley-Davidson. So it doesn’t have pushrods? So it’s a 60 degree Vee instead of a 45? So it has overhead cams? So it’s got *GASP* liquid cooling and a radiator… So it’s an impressive, modern motorcycle. No doubt most people will see these as benefits that are in line with progress without breaking from heritage. In fact these bikes have some serious heritage that needs noting…

In contrast, the Sportster broke the Harley mold in 1957 for design.

The development of the ‘Sporty’ really jumped up and to take over the world in the form of the 1970 XR 750. No they are not like the modern high displacement touring bikes  with 1800cc (110 cubic inches) monster engines but as the most successful race motorcycle in all history it’s not an understatement to call them fire breathing beasts which put horsepower to weight ratios above sheer displacement. Note: Something needs to be said for the Buell brand and how amazing the Sportster platform based machines were but that’s for another day..

In 1994 Harley decided that world domination on dirt was not enough and started the VR1000 World Superbike Race program… and so was born the Revolution engine. Harley-Davidson developed the race team and motor platform up to a respectable level of competition then surprised a lot of people. Forget the rumors about building a sport bike.. Harley stopped the road race program and put a production version of the motor into a drag race chassis for the street! In 2001 Harley introduced the radical V-Rod and it’s high tech not to mention bulletproof Revolution engine…

History lesson aside the new STREET line from Harley-Davidson is all Harley and has more than enough heritage to stand on it’s own. The 750 STREET and 500 STREET are MODERN Harleys built from modern influences to meet the demands of our current culture. In terms of delivery the Motor Company is clearly angled to an urban youth perspective with the new STREET line.

The 750 and 500 STREET are screaming for modification..

In the  initial photos of the bikes there’s a few Dark Custom images and no one would think that Harley’s Screamin’ Eagle division would let these bikes out with anything less than the full monty.  Everyone seems pretty excited to see what a customized and hopped up 750 is capable of.

For now there is little else to say except that this is such an exciting direction for Harley-Davidson that no doubt they will be pulling in a lot more motorcycle riders who may have never considered a Harley before. That being said i think for now it’s best to let the numbers speak for themselves.
